Things become tumultuous, however, when Lilly bumps into her childhood love, Atlas Corrigan. She later rekindles her childhood romance with Atlas, and the two marry.

Biography[edit]

Early History[edit]

Meeting Ryle[edit]

One night after Lilly's father's funeral, Lilly heads up to the rooftop of a large, upper-class apartment block to clear her thoughts following the deliverance of a eulogy at her father's funeral.

Whilst atop of the rooftop, Lilly bumps into Ryle Kincaid, a resident and handsome neurosurgeon. The two talk, and there is immediate chemistry between the two, but Ryle makes it clear from the get-go that he isn't interested in a relationship, but a casual fling. Lilly also makes it clear that this isn't her, and she doesn't like that kind of stuff. The two part way mometarily.

Six months later, Lilly opens her own floral business, and hires a young girl Allysa, to work at her business with her. Unbeknownst to her, Allysa is the sister of Ryle, the handsome surgeon she had met six months earlier on the roof of the apartment block.

The chemistry between Lilly and Ryle quickly grows, and Ryle eventually admits that he would be open to a relationship with Lilly despite earlier remarks that he was only interested in a casual fling. The two begin seeing one another officialy, much to Allysa's delight.

Rekindling with Atlas[edit]

Following the start of her relationship with Ryle, Lilly becomes sentimental about her past. Particularly, the relationship she had with Atlas Corrigan and the experiences of the relationship between her mother and father. She begins reading the journals that she kept when she was fifteen years old. The journals are written in the form of letters to Ellen DeGeneres, and depict events of her childhood, including times when her father would abuse her mother, but also happier times, such as when she and Atlas met and when she would help him.

Reading the journals made Lilly question whether she too was seeking closure on that part of her life with Atlas, since she had always wondered why he never 'came back' for her after enlisting in the Marines.

Things become more complicated for Lilly when one night, during a date in which Ryle is meeting her mother, she bumps into Atlas at a restaurant; it is revealed that he is the head chef at the restaurant. This encounter brings back a host of feelings for Lilly, but she believes that it is finally the closure that she has been looking for and wanting for the previous nine years between when she last saw Atlas and now.

The abusive relationship[edit]

Ending things with Ryle[edit]

Marriage to Atlas[edit]

Eventually, Lilly and Atlas rekindle their relationship and despite initially wanting to take things slow, they meet at the end of It Ends With Us on the sidewalk and decide to give it a shot at being together once more. It is tricky at first, and the two have a lot to learn about one another after spending such a large portion of their lives apart. This is made more difficult with the presence of Ryle in their lives and the opposition he holds over the two dating.

As their relationship develops further, the two address their history together, with Lilly allowing Altas to read some of her journals from their time together — this includes Lilly's account of their first kiss together. It becomes clear that Atlas did not leave to live with his uncle in Boston, in fact, he doesn't have an uncle in Boston. This hurts Lilly, but she understands that he did it to protect her from her father. In return for allowing him to read her journals, Atlas writes Lilly a letter in the notes app of his phone and allows her to read that.

After months of dating officially, Atlas asks Lilly if she would consider moving in with him. She is initially dubious of the idea, given that this would include her daughter moving in with him too (which could have unknown consequences with Ryle), but she eventually agrees and the two move in with Atlas. Later, it becomes clear that Lilly's mother knew that Atlas was someone from her past, and tells a story about how she and Atlas met one time when he was sleeping over at their house whilst she was supposed to be at work. Atlas eventually asks Lilly to marry him and she agrees without hesistation. Atlas' vows to Lilly are read at the end of It Starts With Us.
