It Starts With Us is a contemporary young-adult romance novel and the second book in the It Ends With Us duology. It is a direct sequel to It Ends With Us, picking up where the events of the first book ended.
Hoover announced that the book was a "thank you" to fans for their support of the first book and, shortly after announcement, became Simon & Schushter's most pre-ordered book of all time.

- The book is written in a dual-narration, with each chapter switching between Atlas and Lilly's perception of ongoing events. Whilst this is sometimes confusing, each chapter has a subheading to alert the reader to who is currently narrating at any given time.
- The book was initially premised to be a sequel, hence the name, but during writing Hoover changed her plans and the book was made to be a sequel.
